GPT Workspace

Dark Mode for Google Docs, Page Included

Google Docs has no dark theme on the web. The free GPT Workspace Chrome extension adds one: dark toolbars with a white page, or a fully dark page with light text. Images keep their colours and the document never changes.

Key Features

Everything you need to work smarter with AI in Google Workspace.

Two modes, one click

Dark toolbars keeps the page white and darkens the menus, toolbars and side panels. Full dark turns the page near-black with light text. Pick per app from the ⋮ menu in the GPT Workspace bar at the bottom of the document.

Images keep their colours

Photos, drawings, embedded content and avatars are inverted back, so a dark document still shows the real picture. Text, tables and highlights invert cleanly because Docs draws them as vector tiles.

Print and export untouched

Printing and Save as PDF ignore the dark rendering. The file, sharing and what collaborators see never change: it is only how your screen draws the page.

Shortcut and no white flash

Alt+Shift+D toggles dark mode in any Google app. The setting is applied before the page paints, so a dark document opens dark, and it syncs across your open tabs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not on the web. As of October 2026 Google offers a dark theme only in the Docs, Sheets and Slides apps for Android and iOS. On desktop Chrome you need an extension, and GPT Workspace includes one free.

No. It is a colour inversion applied in your browser through a stylesheet. Nothing is written to the file, nothing is sent anywhere, and collaborators see the document exactly as before.

Printing and Save as PDF are unaffected because a print rule removes the filter. PDF export, Download as DOCX and sharing all use the original colours.

No. Images, photos, videos, embedded content, avatars and logos are inverted back so they keep their real colours. Only the page, text, tables and highlights go dark.

Yes. The same extension darkens Google Drive, Sheets, Slides and Gmail, with the mode remembered per app. Drive has no page, so it offers Off and Full dark.

Alt+Shift+D toggles between off and your last mode in every app, with a small toast confirming the change. You can change the key at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
