How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your Word file

Choose a .docx up to 50 MB. Legacy .doc files should be saved as .docx first.

  2. 2

    Review the Markdown

Headings, bold and italic text, lists, links, tables and images are mapped to Markdown and shown in a live preview.

  3. 3

    Copy or download

Copy the Markdown for ChatGPT, Notion or GitHub, download the .md file, or open it as a Google Doc.

What you get

Headings and structure

Word heading styles become # headings, paragraphs keep their order and horizontal rules are preserved.

Tables survive

Word tables are converted into Markdown pipe tables, something most converters silently drop.

Lists at every level

Bulleted, numbered and nested lists keep their nesting.

Inline formatting

Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, superscript, links and footnotes come through as Markdown.

Images handled

Embedded images are listed as Markdown image references so you can re-upload them where the text lands.

Browser only

The .docx is unpacked and converted in your browser. No upload, no server copy, no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Word document to Markdown?

Drop the .docx file on the box above or click to choose it. The document is read in your browser and converted to Markdown within a second or two. Then copy it, download the .md file or open it in Google Docs.

Why is my .doc file rejected?

The old binary .doc format is not supported. Open the file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, save it as .docx and convert that file.

Are tables converted to Markdown?

Yes. Word tables become GitHub-flavoured pipe tables with a header row. Merged cells are flattened because Markdown has no equivalent.

What happens to images?

Images are referenced as Markdown image tags with a placeholder name so you know where they belong. Export the pictures from Word and add them where you publish.

Does it keep bold, italic and links?

Yes. Bold, italic, strikethrough, hyperlinks, inline code and footnotes are all mapped to their Markdown equivalents. Colours, fonts and highlights have no Markdown form and are dropped.

Is the file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion uses a JavaScript library running in your browser tab. Only Open in Google Docs sends the resulting Markdown, and only when you click it.
